Article 2 Summary (The Truth About Online Shopping)

In the article The Truth About Online Shopping I learned that studies have a term for a shopper who exclusively shops online-the term is cybernaut. I also learned that amazon in particular sends out vans that are usually only half full of packages containing customers orders assuring delivery in a timely manner. Packaging also has a significant role on environmental impact for example when you select a two day shipping option there usually is two separate packages coming from two parts of the country. This calls for two separate boxes. The carbon emissions of products on average are thirty five percent more when shipped separatley then when together. A study by Peerless Research Group found on average that packaging contains twenty percent of wasted space creating waste for landfills. Bottom line think before the next time you do online shopping it may or may not be good for your wallet but is it good for our environment?

Summary On Article 1 (Social And Emotional Benefits Of Video Games:Metacognition and Relationships

In Social And Emotional Benefits Of Video Games and Metacognition and Relationships by Brad Flickinger he says” “for years most people thought video games were like candy”, bad and tempting to children but ok in moderation. He also says that now a days parents understand video games can have a more “nutritional value” and even an “educational value”. The first video games such as pacman were mainly used for entertainment. A few video games like oregeon trail and reader rabbit were made available for learning purposes though. Then educational games became available in more school settings a game involving “shooting them up aliens “where each question/solution you got correct launched a missle at your enemy.. questions were based on facts, letters ,or numbers. This helped to put parents at ease. Video games have social, emotional and meta cognitive benefits. We want children to be able to develop strong meta cognitive skills and also be able to become critical thinkers. Studies show that children who play a lot of video games show measurable changes in nueral processing and efficiency . Metacognition is what educators are referring to now a days when creating life long learners. Metacognitive skills are also being learned remotley thru technology in alot of cases now a days.

final draft of essay 1

Stephanie Mitchell English 101 Essay 1

In the world of healthcare, you never know what challenges to expect. You see I work in a nursing home.  I was raised by my grandmother who was a registered nurse for about eighteen years.  Two of her daughters followed in her footsteps.  I somewhat followed into her footsteps as well. I love working in the medical field. I love the patient care.  I do not like the paper work aspect of what I see the nurses having to do.   My talent is more working alongside of elders, more specifically with Alzheimer’s patients. I have worked overnights on a locked Alzheimer unit for many years.

Now you may ask me what is Alzheimer’s.  Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurological disorder that causes the brain to atrophy and brain cells to die.   This disease effects the individual’s memory, their ability to think and reason, to make decisions and judgments, mood and personality changes, and inability to perform tasks. There is no treatment to cure Alzheimer disease. Medications and supportive services can be used to help slow the progression of the disease.  A combination of these two medications Aricept and Namenda are two of many medications on the current market available to be prescribed. There is no way to predict an individual’s course through this disease. The disease can begin in late middle ages with symptoms of forgetting where you put something, or how to balance your checkbook. Family general practioners witness how families cover up and accommodate for their loved one’s symptoms.  Symptoms can vary from day to day but they do progress and eventually can continue to kept hidden.   The symptoms become more prominent over time. Many families will choose to manage family members at home for as long as possible with outside services such as home health aides or visiting nurses. Alternate options available include medical adult daycares that also provide day services to give families respite. More often than not elders who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease do get admitted into a skilled nursing facility like the ones where I work, because the families just cannot care for the needs any more. The individual may have been wandering at night, or was not able to care for their own basic needs any longer. In the Advance stages of this disease, the complication from the severe loss of brain function eventually results in death from dehydration, malnutrition or infection.

A very important person in my life has been diagnosed with this terrible disease.  My maternal grandfather was diagnosed about three and a half years ago. He would have an occasional forgetful thing happen here or there, and now I see him have a hard time find words to say what he is trying to say.  I can see he is frustrated and sad because of this, but he would never admit it. He was always and still is a strong and stoic man, the matriarch of the family.  The pandemic has the progression of his disease advance a bit quicker with not being able to have the social stimulation and activity he was used to despite being on medications.  My grandmother prefills a pillbox for him, but often times has to remind him to take the medications.

Working on an Alzheimer’s Unit, the most important thing is to keep your patients safe. I work 11pm to 7am. The staff has tasks to complete. The primary thing we do is checking on patients and running to call lights, rounding all night.  Despite all my years working, and being there to help others family members it never prepares you for your what you will endure with your own family.

memoir peer review (nekole)

I feel as if her essay had a very strong point on advocating for her son. I like how she goes into more organized detail from telling readers about some of her pre-pregnancy experiences to learning to accepting and dealing with her son Elliots autism This main message of the essay seems to be to accept autism and love all children the same autistic or not .I think the essay does meet the required guidelines. Good at giving details to. Overall good essay.

Essay 1

In the world of healthcare you never know what challenges to expect. You see I work in a nursing home. I was raised by my grandmother who was a registered nurse for about eighteen years. I do not like the paper work aspect of what I see the nurses having to do My talent is more working with Alzheimer. I worked overnights on a locked Alzheimer unit. Now you may ask me what is Alzheimer..well it is a progress disease that destroys memory and other important mental functions. That is the online definition. There is also Alzheimer dementia which is a more advanced stage of Alzheimer. In dementia brain cells will eventually die and degenerate leaving the person more confused and eventually destroying all memory and important mental and basic cognitive functions. There is no current cure or treatment for Alzheimer dementia. Symptoms can be managed and there are medications to help slow down the disease. A combination of these two medications aricept and namenda are prescribed to improve memory, attention, reason, language and the ability to still be able to perform simple daily tasks. Behaviors from day to day will always be unpredictable with any diagnosis. This disease has been known to affect people in early adulthood but is more common in the elderly.

My Response To Peer Review

In Past experiences I have not had much success with peer review work. I say this because I have never felt to comfortable with having a peer critique my work. At the same time I am grateful for the positive and negative feedback. This of course does help me to revise my work before my final grade. In this particular peer review I would imagine Nekole probably felt the same way . I do like how Nekole is a more organized writer then me though.

I learned that peer reviews are not necessarily meant to be critical but to help students learn from one another. As I continue to read the essays of my peers, I will continue to see what other people do. I miss being part of a class and the environment of actually communicating with people. I understand that as continue down the path of papers, more will be done. Thank you for the opportunity.

I know that as a young artist that I will continue to read these papers, even though I dislike peer reviews. I understand why they are necessary to help grow and learn. I understand other people may not always see peer reviews the same way as I do, but as I learn more about the styles of my peers, i will learn what to expect. I hope to continue to learn about my peers, even though I may never meet my peers. I hope this class will teach me how to be a better writer.

Journal #2 Entry

The article I read is calling for all women to not be called out as far as being stereotyped for being called “fat”. The author does make the point that is it easier for some women to lose weigh then others. Women can do this by taking classes such as aerobics and exercise classes. Ideally women are being encouraged to be able to be able to feel good about them selves without negative words from others no matter what size they are without the stero tpyes from other “fat” and thin people.
